TEACHING ECONOMICS USING CHILDREN'S LITERATURE (K-4)

This workshop focuses on an interdisciplinary approach to help teachers introduce their students to economics using popular children's stories. Sections include:

  • definitions of key economic concepts
  • 21 lessons based on specific stories
  • teaching activities for use with any children's story
  • an annotated bibliography of suggested titles

This is an excellent way to make efficient use of your time as you teach economics, math and language arts while fulfilling your reading requirements. You'll approach children's books such as The Giving Tree, A Chair for My Mother, and Island of the Blue Dolphins in a whole new way. Your students will have fun and so will you with this activity-based curriculum.

Workshop presented by the Center for Economic Education, the University of Memphis. Curriculum is provided.
